Digestate-Derived Ammonium Fertilizers and Their Blends as Substitutes to Synthetic Nitrogen Fertilizers

Nutrient recovery from biomass streams generates novel recycling-derived fertilizers (RDFs). The effect of RDFs depends on their nutrient content and variability, which can aid or hinder use by end-users. Detailed characterization help in evaluating product properties, whereas blending optimize ratios reduce variability. This study assesses ammonium nitrate (AN) stripping-scrubbing, water (AW) concentrate (CaE) evaporation, two tailor-made blends (AN + CaE AW CaE), for potential as nitrogen (N) the pot cultivation lettuce. Parallelly, a soil incubation experiment was conducted to investigate N release dynamics tested RDFs. were compared against commercial calcium (CAN) an unfertilized control. AN fertilization resulted similar crop yield uptake CAN treatment. exhibited poor uptake, possibly due sodium toxicity detected. displayed fertilizer replacement values above 100%, results current experiments. showed positive priming treatment, over 100%. Further research under uncontrolled field conditions utilizing diverse types validate potential.
